The key sits heavily across his neck, weighing him down under the belief his mother continues to stoke among the Fremen—among his people. A gift, he was told, as it was pressed into his palm and covered by his fingers. It is the key to their stores of water—not quite as sacred as the water that is reclaimed from the dead yet untouched, but important, too important to be handed to him—and it now resides around his neck, burning a hole into his chest and never letting him forget.

Oh man, I love this - it definitely captures Paul's sense of being trapped by his own legacy, and alongside the responsibility that comes with this gift, the key to the communal water stores is just such an excellent physical symbol of the weight of that trust he never asked for. Really lovely work.

cw: Steve is in the hospital after the future final battle with Vecna, but there's no blood or anything. Definitely nothing worse than canon!

The sharp, acrid air of the hospital fills Steve's senses. Even the painkillers they must have put him on aren't enough to help him sleep comfortably through it for long. His body feels almost weightless under the drugs, so much so that he can hardly feel the thin mattress underneath him, but the smell? It seeps into his pores, his nose, his mouth—inescapable no matter how shallowly he breathes.

Steve hates hospitals. He hates them so much that he's done everything he can to avoid staying in one, even after being interrogated by the Russians and half-eaten by demobats. Figures that he couldn't get away with avoiding them forever; figures even more that Vecna would go all out for his big finale.

At least that creepy fucker is dead.

Three soft knocks come from behind the door to his room before the handle turns and Nancy's head peeks inside. Her expression, pinched in exhaustion and worry, melts into relief when their eyes meet. It helps curb some of his guilt over being part of the cause of her fatigue.

"You're awake," she says, her voice almost too quiet to hear from across the room. She slips the rest of the way inside, shutting the door behind her with a quiet click. "The drugs they've got you on must be good. You've been asleep every time I've come by."

Steve stretches his fingers and lifts his arm towards her. Nancy doesn't hesitate to close the distance and take his hand between both of hers. Her fingers are rough, calloused from years of shooting—at actual monsters or at targets to keep herself sharp for the next time monsters come around. Some of the tension Steve had been feeling melts away under her touch. She's warm—he hadn't realized his hand was cold until she took it in hers-- and even exhausted, her small smile is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen.

She reaches out, brushing his hair off his forehead and lingering when that's done. Her hand feels even better palmed against the skin of his forehead. Steve briefly closes his eyes, leaning into her touch.

"How are you feeling?"

"Better now," he says, whispers more like, because his throat is still bruised and sore when he tries to speak. Vecna's vines did a number on it when they had him pinned. The pain he'd felt afterwards when he tried to swallow or speak is part of why he's here at all; it might be the last place he wants to be, but better stuck in a hospital than risk finding himself unable to breathe because his throat swelled up at some point.

He squeezes her hand. "You?"

Thankfully, Nancy doesn't look confused. Steve's throat stings too much to comfortably let him elaborate.

Smiling, her hand slides down the side of his face to cup his cheek. "Better now."

Steve doesn't know how long they spend like that before there's a sharp double tap against the door. The sound startles them both. They both jumped when they heard it and Steve can't help the raspy laughter that spills out of him. Nancy follows soon after with a quiet laugh of her own. They've fought monsters and governments and been to an entirely different dimension, and jumping because of a knock on a door—in a hospital no less—feels ridiculous.

"Oh good, you're awake," the nurse says as she pushes a cart inside. She smiles at Steve and then Nancy, her eyes drifting to where they're still holding hands and softening further. "Think you're up to getting something in your stomach?"

She brushes past Nancy, sliding a small metal cart out from against the wall and pressing it up against the side of his bed. From the cart she brought in with her, she pulls out a tray and sets it down. Looking between the both of them again, the nurse says, "There are a couple options. With your throat, you need something soft. There's some oatmeal, but if you find that too hard to swallow, maybe try some yogurt instead. Will you be…"

"We've got it," Nancy says, letting go of Steve to drag the visitor's chair close to his bedside. The nurse smiles at her again, then at Steve.

"I'll be back to check on you after you've had a chance to eat."

"Thank you," he whispers because it feels rude not to, even if his throat would rather he stay quiet.

"Anytime. See you in a little while."

And with that, she leaves the room with her cart and Steve and Nancy are alone again. As nice as his nurse is, Steve prefers it this way.

Nancy reaches down and does something with the side of the bed that adjusts it a little higher. Steve sighs in relief; sitting up feels amazing. Like he's almost a person again.

"There," Nancy says, leaning down to press a lingering kiss to his forehead before sitting on her chair. If Steve wasn't so hungry, he would tell her to forget the food and come join him, too small bed be damned. But his stomach is hollow and he realizes as Nancy takes the lid off the tray that he can't remember the last time he ate.

Fighting monsters is hell on keeping a regular meal time schedule.

"Oatmeal first?" Nancy asks, reaching for a bowl that has a cover of its own. When he nods, she takes the lid off and steam puffs out. "Oh good, it's warm. I wasn't sure with," she gestures to the room around them, "it being hospital food."

She scoops some of the oatmeal up with the spoon she finds on the tray and even blows on it for him before bringing it up to his mouth. Steve thinks he might have been embarrassed about this, if he'd had to be fed after any of his other encounters with the Upside Down. But it feels the opposite of that now; as Nancy helps him eat—and thankfully, the oatmeal goes down without an issue—Steve feels cared for. He could get used to that.

The soft, happy look on Nancy's face tells him that he will.

A little AU of their first date, if they'd been soulmates <3

Dexter doesn't know what to make of the spark that zaps where his and Rita's hands meet. The sensation crawls up his wrist and arm, making its way through the rest of his body. It's a pleasant feeling; there's a comfortable warmth to it. He wants to chase that feeling, to rest his other hand over top of hers and soak it all in and that brings him up short.

He never wants to initiate more touching. Only ever when it's necessary to sell that he's normal and decides to pursue a more intimate relationship like normal people do. The relationships never last long after that—the monster he is can't seem to be hidden during sex no matter how hard he tries—so he doesn't often have to time to get used to it, and he never wants to seek it out.

But now, as he blinks at their joined hands in confusion, Dexter has to curl his other fingers into a fist to resist the urge to reach out for more.

The world slowly fades back in, the sounds of the restaurant they're supposed to be walking into becoming a little bit louder every second he stands staring in confusion. Dexter blinks again, lifting his gaze to find Rita—no wonder Debra was so tight-lipped about his date's name—still staring at their hands. Her eyes are wide, her body still, and Dexter… doesn't know what to do. He rarely does when it comes to making people feel better and it's so much worse when he's the cause of their distress.

Slowly, her eyes trail up to meet his and Dexter doesn't know which of them holds the other tighter in response.

Then, Rita's lips move, stretching into a smile. It's small, quiet. The same as her. But something in Dexter's chest loosens at the sight of it.

"I guess now I know why Debra was so insistent about giving this a shot."

Dexter's lips twitch, copying Rita's smile as best he can. It's strangely easier than usual—he can dwell on the "why" of that later.

"She thinks she's funny," he says, jokes, even.

Rita laughs and it's small, like her smile. Dexter swallows, glancing to the side. "We should head inside…"

Squeezing his hand, Rita nods. "I'd like that."

Oddly enough, so would Dexter.

This was a fun one! I hope you enjoy <3

Screams can be heard from inside of Angel Grove's singular haunted house, even through the music being pumped out through speakers lining the entrance and queue. It's not exactly unusual. The whole place is designed to make you scream. People come and wait an hour in line for a few minutes of being led from one jump scare to another only to get right back in line and do it all over again.

Jason loves a good haunted house. He's been coming to this one since he got too old to trick or treat but didn't want to give up all the fun of Halloween and the spooky season. There's something about walking through a dark house with flashing lights and scare actors. When he and his friends fight off the dangers trying to make their home in Angel Grove, he feels that same rush of adrenaline but it's tinged with fear—that he won't be fast enough, strong enough, smart enough to beat them. Coming to a haunted house is all the thrill and none of the worry.

He liked it before and since becoming a Power Ranger, he can't get enough.

Figures the first time he goes with Billy, it's to investigate some rumors his friend has heard about it. Rita Repulsa-shaped rumors, according to him. Jason's only been once so far this year. He didn't see anything strange then, but Billy also hadn't heard anything about the place then, either. If something is going on, it seems like it happened sometime in the last week.

When it's their turn to join the group inside, Billy shifts closer to Jason's side. His head twists and turns and Jason thinks he should have asked Billy whether he's ever done this before. Too late now, given that they're heading straight for their first jump scare of the house.

Billy jolts when a man bursts out from behind a hidden door. His hand ends up around Jason's wrist. Jason's eyebrows lift in surprise. His friend isn't exactly tactile; he tends to prefer nobody touch him except in rare moments after a fight. Even then, Jason figures he only tolerates it because he knows Jason is a hugger and sometimes needs a physical reminder that Billy is still there—a habit he picked up after they almost lost him for good the first time.

"You know," he has to yell to be heard over the noises of the house and even then, Jason leans in closer to Billy just in case, "if you wanted to go to a haunted house together, you could have just—"

An explosion rocks the ground under their feet. It's followed by maniacal laughter—familiar laughter. Definitely not part of the act, then. Jason meets Billy's eyes through the strobing lights and fog and they nod as one before darting out of the building with everyone else. They break off from the rest once they're outside. Billy's phone chimes when Jason messages the group chat so he knows the others will get it, too.

Until then, Jason and Billy will do what they can to hold off some of Rita's goons and get everyone to safety.

He meets Billy's eyes again once they're out of sight and gets a nod in return.

"It's morphin' time."

The house is in shambles by the time the fighting is done. Jason is grateful they were able to keep so many people safe. Rita is gone along with her henchmen. They won. He should be happy. And he is.

But he stares at the remains of one of his favorite places to go and can't help being upset that the bad guys got away with even that much destruction.

"Uh, Jason?" Billy asks, his blue suit melting away now that the danger's past and they're the only people around.

Without looking away from the rubble, Jason replies, "Yeah?"

"Would you want to go to that haunted maze over in Stone Canyon? Together? As, like, a date, but it doesn't have to be a date, we could just go as friends or we don't have to go at all or you could—"

"Billy?" Jason says because sometimes the only way to get Billy to stop is to interrupt him before he really gets going. He turns, meeting Billy's eyes before they glance to the side and back again. "It's a date."
