Summary: Written for an Anonymous prompt: Sam/Castiel, Pining.
Castiel watches Sam more and more as time goes on. First with a wary eye, as the boy with the demon blood who was destined to bring about the Apocalypse. Then as the broken man trying to redeem himself for something he couldn’t be convinced wasn’t solely his fault. The man is one of two friends Castiel has in the whole world and he would die to protect either of them.

Castiel watches Sam more and more as time goes on. First with a wary eye, as the boy with the demon blood who was destined to bring about the Apocalypse. Then as the broken man trying to redeem himself for something he couldn’t be convinced wasn’t solely his fault. The man is one of two friends Castiel has in the whole world and he would die to protect either of them.
What he doesn’t understand is the strange warmth he feels – a flare of his weakened grace – at the sight of Sam Winchester that is so obviously absent when he looks at Dean. It is strange and new and unexpected but when Sam sends him a small smile, unlike the ones Castiel has seen him give his brother, and Dean rolls his eyes in a way that suggests he sees something they don’t, Castiel doesn’t fight the upward twitch of his own lips in response.
