Title: Untitled (for now)
Fandom: Stranger Things
Pairing: Chrissy Cunningham/Steve Harrington
Genre: Romance, pre-relationship, 90s AU
Summary: The best part of Steve's day is when he logs into his instant messenger and sees a message from CheerChampion86.
Notes: Written as a fill for a prompt given to me by sweetpeapod.

Something I thought might be kind of cute with these two: semi-canon but 90's and a chatroom!AU? They don't know who they're talking to at first, you know the deal

Steve shuffled slowly through the front door and into the house. Getting through a shift at Family Video was almost enough to make him miss high school. How in the hell dealing with customers all day could make him feel dumber than he'd been when he first clocked in, he didn't know, but somehow they managed it.

Getting into a shower and putting together something to eat was what he should do now that he was home. Instead, he found himself shuffling into the computer room, throwing his green vest onto a chair on the way, and booting the system up. He did manage to use the time waiting for the dial up to connect to change out of his work outfit and into an old pair of Hawkins High gym clothes. They were worn soft from how often he chose them as his relaxing-around-the-house outfit, which only led to him choosing it more.

He wondered as he began logging into the instant messenger if he should be embarrassed over his shoulders drooping in relief. If Dustin or Robin knew exactly how much he looked forward to this part of the day, they would never let him live it down. Especially after how reluctant he'd been to check out chat rooms in the first place. If it hadn't been for Dustin pushing and pushing-- it's even better than talking on the phone, Steve!-- he probably still wouldn't use his computer for more than a game of solitaire or two while he was bored.

Now, he had a whole second phone line in order to allow him the freedom to stay logged in online for as long as he wanted without worrying about missing any phone calls.

The reason for his drooping shoulders had sent him a message while he was away.

CheerChampion86: beat u :P

A small smile graced his face. This was why he would be embarrassed if anyone found out. It was a stupid little message that basically said nothing but it was the best thing he had read all day.

the_fairer_fawcett: -_- Some of us have to work for a living

CheerChampion86: ur fault 4 graduating

Snorting, Steve shook his head. He tapped his finger against the top of a key while he considered before landing on the truth.

the_fairer_fawcett: Still surprised they let me

He didn't know who exactly it was he was talking to. She was a girl, or so she had told him, and local, and apparently into cheerleading. Even if Hawkins wasn't the biggest city around, none of that information helped him narrow it down much. Since meeting her, his eyes lingered on the cheerleaders he saw while cheering Lucas on at his games, wondering whether she was among them, but he couldn't be sure. For all he knew, his online friend just enjoyed the sport. She didn't have to be involved in it.

There were plenty of sports Steve enjoyed enough to talk about that he'd never played himself.

Whoever she was, Steve was half in love with her and he hadn't even seen her face. Robin would rip him a new one if she knew-- she'd told him multiple times while Dustin egged him on to check out some chat rooms to be safe, to keep his personal information to himself.

For the most part, he did. It was only after moving from a shared public chat room to each other's list of friends and private messaging that he started sharing more about himself.

Like the fact that he'd graduated from high school the year before.

CheerChampion86: im not. ur a pretty smart guy

the_fairer_fawcett: :o You think I'm pretty? ://)

It took her a little longer to reply this time, but Steve wasn't worried. His fingers sat motionless on the keyboard and his chest ached with the need to breathe, but he wasn't concerned that he had stepped over a line.

CheerChampion86: pretty as ur namesake

It didn't mean anything that he slumped forward with a harsh sigh at the sight of her reply. Or that his neck felt hot under the collar of his shirt. She didn't mean it-- CheerChampion86 didn't even know what he looked like. But the thought that she might not be disappointed if she ever did find out who she chatted with every day was a heady one.

the_fairer_fawcett: And don't you forget it :-*

CheerChampion86: ur such a dork

If she only knew. Dustin had rubbed off on Steve in a big way since he declared them best friends after Steve helped him out of a tough spot.

the_fairer_fawcett: So

CheerChampion86: so...

Steve huffed and shook his head. He might have been halfway in love with her, but she still managed to drive him a little bit crazy.

Actually...that fit his track record for girlfriends a little too well.

the_fairer_fawcett: Was it as bad as you thought it would be?

There was another pause that didn't have Steve second guessing every word he had typed leading up to this.

CheerChampion86: worse. so much worse. parents suck

the_fairer_fawcett: Won't hear any argument from me

CheerChampion86: :(

Steve wished he could do more than reassure her that she wouldn't be stuck with them forever. His life had gotten significantly better after striking out on his own but he knew that wasn't an option for everyone. She hadn't even graduated high school yet; and whenever she did, she still might not have the chance to remove them from her life.

Family was complicated.

the_fairer_fawcett: You ever need anything…

CheerChampion86: keep offering n i might take u up on it

Nothing would make him happier than if she did.

CheerChampion86: meet me after the game? u know where

That was the last message CC had sent him, days before the next game was set to happen. The week passed slow as molasses. Every day that he logged back on to nothing new, Steve's worry grew. He forced himself to keep interactions with everyone else short because the constant worry had his nerves frayed enough he kept nearly snapping at friends and customers alike-- neither of which actually deserved any of his ire, no matter how trivial their question.

The night of the game, Steve did his best to pay attention but he mostly ended up reacting seconds after everyone else, mirroring the crowd's enthusiasm while having no idea what had happened. His eyes found their way to the cheerleaders more often than not. He didn't know which, if any, of them were CC, but that didn't stop him looking.

He recognized a decent number of them. Between having only just graduated the year before and going to all of Lucas' home games when work didn't interfere, Steve wasn't too far out of the loop compared to how he was sure he would be in a few years. It was hard to believe his friend could be any of them; they hadn't exactly been his biggest fans after he dropped Tommy and Carol in junior year when they didn't approve of his relationship with Nancy Wheeler-- or rather how seriously he took that new relationship.

Steve hoped she wouldn't hold any of his high school idiocy against him, once she realized who he was.

The game passed in a blur-- Steve thought Hawkins won, based on the energy of the crowd as they started clearing out, but he wasn't sure. He was too focused on psyching himself up. This was it. Once he found his way to the baseball bleachers, where it was only dimly lit because no one in their right minds should be at that field, there would be no going back.

He wasn't too proud to admit, at least to himself, that he was scared.

Scared or not, Steve wasn't a coward. His feet eventually carried him where he needed to go and stayed planted in place until he heard the soft footfalls of someone walking towards the bleachers.

"...Steve?"

Pushing himself up straight, Steve turned towards the voice and found himself face-to-face with the cheerleading captain, Chrissy Cunningham.

Cheer champion, indeed.

He gave an awkward wave, but his shoulders lost some of their tension at her tentative smile.

Steve didn't know where things would go from here, but he was looking forward to finding out.
