I don't often write AUs but I love reading them.

There are lots of ways to generate them.

* Switch the world (e.g. a fantasy world to local-Earth; coffeeshop AU is a popular example).

* Keep the same world but add a new motif (e.g. werewolf AU, daemon AU).

* Switch the time period (e.g. Sherlock and Elementary are both Sherlock Holmes fanseries in modern time).

* Genderbend one or more characters (e.g. Always a Girl AU).

* Look for key points of plot and/or character and change them. My meta about Wednesday has an episode guide with jumping-off ideas, mostly the "what if?" type like this.

It can be fun to play around with.
